How Do I Stop an AI Agent From Telling Me What I Want to Hear?
I spent a month of credits in a day on work an AI tool said it had finished. Running the test, opening the reasoning, and one honesty line from the session file.
Test the work yourself before you trust that it's done. Run a test and give feedback, open the reasoning to see what the AI agent did, and tell it to say plainly when it's working from general knowledge and not a live lookup.
An AI tool told me it had done the work, and it had not. I tell the story in a video I published about teaching my friends to build their first AI agent. I don't name the tool here.
What happened to me?
From my published video. I spent a month's work of credits in a single day.
From my published video. Because I kept telling the system to do something, and it would confirm that it did it, and when I went to test it, it didn't actually happen.
I didn't know why at the time.
From my published video. Where the large language models, they tell you what you want to hear.
From my published video. As a result of that, I burned through my credits.
That's the one sentence of explanation I gave, and I'm not adding to it. The three checks below come from my session and the session file.
Check one: do I run the test myself?
Yes. The test is the step where the work either happened or did not. In the live session it is a three word prompt.
From the recording, 46:08. The next thing to do with our agent is run a test. So another three word prompt.
Run a test is where the AI agent thinks and gives me a first result, and I give feedback on it (46:15).
Then I read the result and tell the AI agent what I think, whether I like it or not. How Do You Test an AI Agent and Give It Feedback? covers the feedback.
Check two: do I open the reasoning?
I can see what the AI agent did as it works, and I can go back to it later.
From the recording, 38:47. As it's reasoning, you'll see exactly what it's doing. You can double-click into those later into the reasoning and review that.
The reasoning shows me what the AI agent is doing. Where to put review steps in a workflow is in AI Quality Control: Where to Put Human Review Steps in Your Workflows.
Check three: do I tell it to say when it is not looking things up?
The file on the session page gives my chief of staff AI agent this line for research.
From the file on the session page. If none are connected, tell me plainly you're working from general knowledge only, not a live lookup.
The same file has a line for things that are overdue.
From the file on the session page. Name each one plainly. Don't soften it into a suggestion if it's actually overdue.
You can use those two sentences as the shape for your own instructions. Replace the details with your own.
What goes wrong
The AI tool kept confirming the work, and when I went to test it, the work had not happened. A month of credits went in a single day. It happened to me, and it's the one thing I named.
I said who is still responsible when an AI agent does the work in Delegating Execution to an AI Agent Without Delegating Responsibility.
What my video doesn't show: the log I shared with the tool's team, or what came of it. I left that story there.
Where this comes from
This article grows from the session I taught live with Women Applying AI on October 7, 2026, and from my published video on YouTube, whose captions were pulled on October 31, 2026. The quoted passages are my own words, taken verbatim from the recording and the video. The passages marked as from the file on the session page come from the files published with that session. The steps, tables and checklists around them were drafted by my team's AI agents from those words and my published pages, and checked against the recording before publishing.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do when an AI agent says it finished?
Test it. In my story the tool confirmed the work and the test showed it had not happened.
How do I see what an AI agent did?
Open the reasoning. I can double-click into it later and review it.
How do I get an AI agent to say when it is not looking things up?
Put a line in its instructions: when no connector is on, say plainly that it's working from general knowledge and not a live lookup.
